Meet The Board
The aim of the North Yorkshire Sport Board is:
'To promote North Yorkshire Sport as a strategic, dynamic, flexible and progressive body, capable of supporting and influencing partners to improve the quality of life for people of all ages within North Yorkshire through sport and physical activity.'
Dave Goodwin- Chair
Head of Service – Health for Hambleton District Council, Currently chair of the North Riding Local Football Partnership and the Chief Leisure Officer Group for North Yorkshire Sport ;Dave also chairs the Hambleton Strollers a walking to health group and is a practicing level 2 FA coach and Manager of an under 18s football team in the Teesside league. Dave has a strong background in Leisure including facility management and is a keen mountain biker in his spare time.
Andy Dukes
Youth Offending Team (YOT) Service Manager for Harrogate, Craven, Hambleton and Richmond. Heads up a multi agency team involving Social Workers, Probation, Police, Health, Targeted Youth Support and YOT workers delivery holistic services to young people aimed at reducing re-offending. Previously set up and managed the Intensive Supervision and Surveillance Programme across York and North Yorkshire which provided targeted programmes of intervention to prolific offenders with an emphasis on constructive leisure activities.
Elaine Schofield
North Yorkshire and York Primary Care Trust
Health Improvement Principal for Adults and is the public health lead for physical activity across North Yorkshire and York.
Guy Masterman
Head of Sport Sciences Northumbria University School of Psychology and Sport Sciences. Author of several sports related publications, Guy has also represented Great Britain at racquetball, achieving GB no.1 status and being team captain between 1983 and 1986, as well as being a keen squash player and a qualified football and tennis coach.
Andy McCarthy
Senior Adviser with Children and Young People Service, NYCC. A former senior leader in schools, his current responsibilities include overseeing the development of curriculum and out of school opportunities within Art, Music and Physical Education, and chairing the PESSCL strategy group which includes the Sports Colleges and School Sport partnerships across York City and North Yorkshire. Andy also facilitates a number of advanced leadership programmes. He is a keen outdoor activity sportsperson with a passion for skiing.
Jo Gilliland
Head of Sport and Active Leisure for City of York Council. Current chair of the City’s physical activity forum and key member of the Active York CSN. A former sports development manager, and PE consultant, Jo’s breadth of experience includes school sport, voluntary sector engagement, facility management, health development, and policy and planning work.
Alison Gane
Former Business Development Manager and Head of Recreation and Sport Services York St John University, Ali is now an Independent Sports Consultant as well as Chair of Active York Community Sports Network, Treasurer and central league co-organiser (voluntary capacity) York and District Youth Netball League. Ali has a strong background in Sport and Leisure, including managing her own Sports Development Consultancy and Sports Development roles within a number of Local Authorities.
John Crowther
John is Chief Executive of Sports Ambition Ltd, a management consultancy offering corporate governance, sponsorship and project management advice to National Governing Bodies of sport and commercial organisations.
He is a Board Director and Treasurer of the Central Council for Physical Recreation (CCPR) and is a non-executive director of Sport Leaders (UK) and Yorkshire Culture. In addition he sits on the Major Match Group of the England and Wales Cricket Board.
John is the former Chief Executive of the Lawn Tennis Association and Vickers Defence Systems.
Alistair Copeland
Head of Performance and Improvement Sport England Yorkshire. Alistair has considerable experience of sport in Yorkshire and has led the strategic planning work of the regional office including the production of the Yorkshire Plan for sport. A former international hockey player, still active as a coach and umpire as well as walking, cycling and mountain biking, enjoying the natural resources of North Yorkshire.
Kathryn Beardmore
Access and Recreation Manager for the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority. Key roles include developing strategy and policy on issues such as healthy living and access for all, and improving rights of way and recreation opportunities, in the Dales, through implementing projects such as the Pennine Bridleway. Kathryn has an interest in all forms of outdoor recreation, and is a keen climber who also enjoys cycling (mountain biking, touring, challenge rides, and the occasional time trail) when not out on the crags.
Tony Stephens
Head of Leisure Museums and Arts Harrogate Borough Council. Member of CLOA’s National Advisory Panel on Regeneration and Economic development. Locally born, Tony has extensive sports experience gained as a player, coach and administrator primarily in football and basketball and is a keen advocate of all sports. Current personal interests include trying to maintain fitness levels and enjoying the Yorkshire countryside.
Martyn Flynn
Rugby Football League Yorkshire Regional Development Manager. Martin has a strong Rugby League background having been a player, coach, referee and administrator. Previous experience has also included 10 years working in Leisure for Scarborough Borough Council as well as a wide-ranging interest in all areas of Sport.
