Education

North Yorkshire Sport sees education as a vital part of their work in improving provision for young people across the county. Working closely with educational partners including Specialist sports colleges, schools and universities to respond to the challenges of the Governments Physical Education, School Sports & Club Links Strategy (PESSCL).

Education and particularly physical education and school sport is changing. The Government is investing £459 million between 2003/04 and 2005/06 into physical education and school sport.

The target is to enhance the take-up of sporting opportunities by five- to 16-year-olds by increasing the percentage of school children that spend a minimum of two hours each week on high-quality PE and school sport within and beyond the curriculum from 25% in 2002 to 75% by 2006. They aim to reach all children by 2007.

To help achieve this, the following targets have been agreed:

  1. Establish a national infrastructure for PE and school sport by creating:
    • 400 Specialist Sports colleges, subject to sufficient high quality applications by 2005; and
    • 400 School Sport Coordinator partnerships by 2006; with
    • 3,200 school Sport Coordinators in Secondary Schools and 18,000 Primary or Special School link Teachers by 2006
  2. Improve the quality of teaching, coaching, and learning in PE and school sport.
  3. Increase the proportion of children guided into clubs from School Sport Coordinator partnerships.
