Special Schools

Special Schools Sport Partnership

The SportsSpecial SSP is a pioneering partnership that is dedicated to improving every child’s experience of PE and School Sport through enhancing and extending opportunities both in curriculum time and during OHSL. This is the first and only partnership of its kind in the country, placing the partnership in an extremely innovative position.

Due to it’s size, the partnership will be able to concentrate on individual school needs, ensuring access to quality, inclusive PESS for young people with disabilities ranging from emotional and behaviour difficulties to profound and multiple learning difficulties.

Through creating and maintaining strong links to mainstream SEN, it is hoped that inclusive activity will become a prominent and accessible feature in all mainstream schools.

Mission Statement:

To enable all young people requiring specialist provision to access quality PE and school sport through enhancing and extending sporting opportunity in North Yorkshire.

Aim:

The partnership consists of 11 Special Schools, 2 pupil referral units and mainstream SEN from across North Yorkshire. There are seven intended outcomes that the work of the SportsSpecial SSP will reflect, these being;

  • Increased participation in high quality PE
  • Increased participation in high quality out of school hours learning (OSHL)
  • Increased activity in high quality informal activity
  • Increased participation in high quality competition and performance
  • Improved attitude, behaviour and attendance
  • Increased attainment and achievement
  •  Increased community participation

The school sports partnership will be instrumental in helping schools to achieve the Government’s PE, School Sport and Club Links (PESSCL) Strategy including the following DfES and DCMS Public Service Agreement (PSA) target;

‘85% of 5-16 year olds spending at least 2 hours high quality PE and sport (within and beyond the curriculum) by 2008, with every partnership achieving at least 75 %’

Structure:

The partnership is headed by a Partnership Development Manager (PDM), Sally Evans who is based at Mowbray School, Bedale. Three School Sports Co-ordinators (SSCo), who are released from teaching for 2 days a week will work directly with a cluster of schools, coordinating and developing after school activity, out of school hours learning, inter and intra school competition and local community links.

Each special school within the partnership has a designated link teacher (LT) who is the PE contact for that school. Each school receives funding to release the LT for 12 days per year for training/school PE enhancement.
