Ethnic Minorities
Racial Equality is a priority for North Yorkshire Sport, having one of the lowest levels of Black and Ethnic minority groups in the country, identifying the needs and ensuring communication with these communities can be a challenge. At North Yorkshire Sport we are committed to ensuring that black and ethnic minority groups are represented and considered at strategic and delivery levels for all sporting activities in the county. North Yorkshire Sport successfully completed the Preliminary level of achieving Racial Equality and are currently building on this through the expansion in to the Equality Standard.
Participation research suggests that levels of participation in the UK have under represented levels for minority groups. The Racial Equality Charter was a tool for the County Sports Partnership (CSP) to help them plan, develop and achieve racial equality in their organisation. North Yorkshire Sport completed the Preliminary level achievement in 2003.
The Equality Standard intends to surpass the Racial Equality Charter as a method to engage in the development of Equality within North Yorkshire. It will reach legislation standards at the same time as being adaptable enough to benefit individual communities. North Yorkshire Sport appreciate that racial Equality is not just about opportunities, but about using sport as a tool to pro-actively change perceptions and attitudes to dispel ignorance and prejudice as stated by the Commission for Racial Equality.
