Women & Girls

"Even by the age of 7 many more girls than boys have been put off sport"

"40% of girls have dropped out of sports activity by the time they reach 18"

"Almost half of adult women in Britain (47%) participate in little or no sport at all"

North Yorkshire Sport are keen to help address the issues for women and girls in sport, targeting not only the access and facilities available but the traditional attitude that hinders the development of Women in Sport.

To achieve this North Yorkshire Sport will adopt the Sport England vision for equality; through the Equality Standard. Specifically including their work with the Women’s Sports Foundation, the active support of women and girl’s projects, in addition to improvement of communication channels within the Delivery System, especially at local level in the evolving Community Sports Networks.

Women’s Sport and Fitness Foundation

The Women’s Sport and Ftness Foundation (WSFF) is the charity that campaigns to make physical activity an integral part of life for women and girls in the UK.

Yorkshire is one of the few regions to have their own Regional Development Officer to work with the partnerships to tackle the barriers Women and Girls face for participation and performance in Sport and Physical Activity.

A current project being undertaken by the WSF in Yorkshire is the development of the Women in Sport Best Practise Guide. As a very successful piece of work utilised in the North East, this will provide clubs, groups and organisations within North Yorkshire the expertise and guidance they need to successfully progress projects. The examples shown from within the region will not only provide information but also the motivation for you to realistically think about a project in your community. The Good Practise Guide will be available on this website when produced.

For further information on the WSF their website is: www.wsf.org.uk

The WSF has also recently launched an additional website that promotes examples of initiatives in the UK that have raised participation levels among women and girls. The aim is to help good practise become best practise.
