Special Olympics City of York
The Special Olympics City of York committee organise, promote and run regular training sessions for budding athletes with learning disabilities in the area. We need your help to improve facilities so that we can reach our ultimate aim of seeing athletes from York competing in the National Games in Leicester in 2009, and then at the World Games in Athens in 2011.
The Special Olympics City of York committee was established in 2007. We are made up of local athletes with learning disabilities, parents of athletes, and other volunteers who all want to make a difference. We are primarily responsible for organising, promoting and running regular training sessions and supporting young people and adults with learning disabilities. This enables them to compete at their level in local, regional and national competitions.
To date, our athletes have already benefited from the training sessions that are running, especially in four sports: Boccia, Football, Athletics and Tennis. However there is still far more work to be done to improve facilities and benefit the athletes, and there is only so much we can do with no funding. Our ultimate aim is to see athletes from York competing in the National Games in Leicester in 2009, and then at the World Games in Athens in 2011.
