Step Into Sport

What is Step into Sport?

Step into Sport is perhaps the only scheme, which is directly linked to sport and is an exciting programme, which encourages young people to become involved with sport as a volunteer within their local community.

Through Sport England, the British Sports Trust and the Youth Sport Trust, Step into Sport provides a clear pathway for young volunteers who want a rewarding, valuable volunteering experience to put their talents and enthusiasm to good use.

Step into sport builds on existing structures and programmes such as Junior Sports Leaders Awards (JSLA) and Community Sport Leaders Award (CSLA) to encourage greater volunteer links between school and clubs. Young volunteers will receive accreditation from the YST once they have completed 50, 100 or 200 hours of voluntary hours.

Volunteer Passport

The Step into Sport Volunteer passport is a dedicated website to allow volunteers to quickly register all their volunteering hours, check on their progress and see up and coming events.  Volunteer Passport

Step into Sport In North Yorkshire

North Yorkshire Sport will liaise with School Sport Partnership (SSP) networks and local authorities to support one of the key objectives of the programme – to get young people aged 16-19 from North Yorkshire into quality community placements.

Approximately 20 potential young volunteers from each of the 9 SSP’s networks will attend a one-day conference. The conference allows the young people to engage in a number of workshops including SAQ, disability sport and fundamentals, enhancing the young peoples learning and knowledge and developing their leadership and team building skills.

How can I be Involved in the Programme?

Volunteer – Get in touch with you School Sports Co-ordinator or contact us here at North Yorkshire Sport.

Club/organisation – Step into Sport is an exciting programme, but it is important young people involved receive a good experience, in a quality environment, carrying out a role relevant to them. North Yorkshire Sport requires a number of Minimum Operating Standards including:

  • Club/organisation must nominate a volunteer co-ordinator
  • Clubs must have achieved or ‘working towards’ accreditation.
  • All associated coached must be qualified and CRB checked.

What can we ask a Step into Sport Volunteer to do?
