Active People Survey

The Active People Survey is the largest ever survey of sport and active recreation to be undertaken in Europe.

The survey is unique in generating reliable statistics on participation in sport and active recreation, providing by far the largest sample size for a sport and recreation survey and allowing levels of analysis that have been previously unavailable.

The first year of the survey, Active People Survey 1, was conducted between October 2005 and October 2006 and was a telephone survey of 363,724 adults in England (aged 16 plus).

The number of people playing sport is tracked continuously through Active People and the survey is now in its ninth year. Each survey year runs from October to October (i.e. data for APS8 was collected from October 2013 to October 2014).

Active People identifies and measures:

  • How participation varies from place to place and between different demographic groups of the population
  • The proportion of the adult population that volunteer in sport on a weekly basis
  • Club membership
  • Involvement in organised sport/competition
  • Receipt of tuition or coaching

Viewing the Latest Active People Results:

Results are released twice a year (in June and December)

The latest reports can be found here and the data can be viewed using the Active People interactive Tool

Active People Interactive Tool

The Active People Interactive Tool is a unique and valuable resource created by Sport England, to help unlock the potential of APS data. The tool allows you to create your own tailored analysis to better understand:

  • who takes part in sport (demographics)
  • How they do so (volunteering, clubs etc.)
  • Where (from the national picture down to local authority level).

You can change how your results are displayed, tailor your analysis, and export the results as a CSV file (compatible with Microsoft Excel)

The Active People Interactive Tool can be accessed here http://activepeople.sportengland.org/

More bespoke analysis can be accessed by using the Small Area Estimates Tool.

Small Area Estimates Tool

How does sports participation vary within a local authority? Sport England has developed a tool which enables users to view small area estimates of participation for every local authority in England. This tool allows you to create more bespoke analysis of the Active People Survey data and view the results in range of formats including maps, charts and tables.
