Why work and swim?

You’ll often hear people say that swimming is the best exercise. But just what is it that makes swimming such an excellent way to get and stay active and why should you take the plunge to link it to your work routine?

There are specific sessions designed for you –

  • Most pools offer early morning and lunchtime swims so you’ll always find somewhere to do your workout.

And what a workout it is –

  • 30 minutes of steady paced lane swimming burns over 200 calories – that’s well over 400 over an hour lunch break.
  • The pressure and resistance of the water makes you work harder, 30 minutes activity in the water is worth 45 minutes of the same activity on land.
  • Swimming works your whole body so great for a full body workout, all over toning and is a great cellulite buster!
  • Any swimming that makes you breathe more heavily counts as ‘moderate’ activity. Even treading water takes effort, so you are working most of the time you’re in the pool.

Everyone can do it –

  • The water takes your weight and supports you, so swimming can be great for those who want low impact exercise such as women during pregnancy, for people who have mobility problems or want to protect their joints.

Alone or with friends –

  • Swimming can be done alone or encourage some work colleagues to go with you. You will usually find a few regulars at the pool too.

And you’ll leave feeling energised –

  • Being in the water can have great psychological effects – the pool can ‘take you away from it all’ and the feeling of being in the water can be refreshing, relaxing and liberating, sending you back to work feeling energised.
  • It’s also great for your lungs – length swimming in particular forces you to breathe in a deep rhythmical way which gives your lungs a boost and more oxygen into your body.
