Bowled over in Bedale :Quality cricket coaching

Bedale Cricket Club is based in the market town of Bedale in North Yorkshire. The club was formed in 1828 and after recently moving from the York and District Senior League in 1999 are now part of the North Yorkshire South Durham League. The 1st XI plays in Division Two and also run an Evening League side playing in Division 2 of the Wensleydale Evening Cricket League. The junior section (U12, U13 and U15s) has long been the envy of many clubs in the area - winning league and cup trophies on a regular basis. From the ages of 9 and 10 the juniors are coached by experienced, qualified coaches and many have gone on to represent the club at a higher level.

Adrian Grayson has coached for over 30 years and has recently received recognition for his achievements by being awarded for being one of Yorkshire outstanding volunteers. He has coached cricket for 33 years at the club and Yorkshire Board Pathways level and has been credited for his outstanding service to North Yorkshire Schools.

Adrian’s dedication and hard work has given young people from North Yorkshire the platform on which to build their cricket career. He has given the framework to aspiring kids from all levels to get involved and to improve their game but also to have fun within the game. With 60 keen aspiring young people wanting to be part of Adrian’s programme, all would agree that the Wednesday night sessions are not be missed.

Adrian said in a recent interview “The club night was initially set up 30 years ago for adults but is now for just juniors ranging from under 9 to under 15 with the like of boys from the Yorkshire cricket also taking part in the session”

Adrian also added “The club was initially privately booked out as a coaching clinic and other coaches would also come down and teach the kids. After 5 years of this initiative being started the coaching team consists of coaches such as Adrian Grayson, Paul Grayson, Kevin Hall, David Jardin, and Martin Harvey. I would like more funds for the club and I would also like more funds for coaches, so they have the opportunity to go onto courses and to further their development as coaches”.

The juniors have recently flourished in the Nidderdale league which is a testament to Adrian and the team’s dedication and hard work. There is a specific training plan which is split up into four team’s ranging from beginners, intermediate to Yorkshire level. On a Wednesday night there are also net sessions which are spilt up into 3 nets.

Adrian is looking for more funding assistance from other bodies such as Sport England and North Yorkshire Cricket Board to improve and develop the Bedale club.

Adrian Grayson has done a fantastic job with Bedale cricket improving and developing the junior programme and the juniors have done very well in the competitions in North Yorkshire.

This is down to Adrian’s hard work and dedication to the sport he loves - cricket.
