Volleyball on the Beach as Olympic Torch Passes

The Olympic Torch entered North Yorkshire for the first time on Monday, and Schools from all around the County were taking part in North Yorkshire's first Beach Volleyball event in Scarborough as part of the North Yorkshire School Games 'Golden Month of Sport'.

The Olympic 'buzz' was certainly felt in Scarborough as the crowds lined the street to catch a view of the torch as it made its way along the sea-front.  Included in the crowds were over 100 young people from all over North Yorkshire who had been competing in a Beach Volleyball event as part of the North Yorkshire School Games.

With 3 tournaments running for School years 7+8 (mixed), year 9/10 boys and year 9/10 girls, the participants had the opportunity to show off their skills in front of a sizeable crowd who had turned out to watch the passing of the Olympic Torch.

Under the guidance of former GB player, David Roberts, a number of volunteers from Scarborough 6th Form had been trained to act as umpires for the games, and they helped ensure that all the games ran smoothly.
