Jo Bonsels

Jo is am a semi-retired qualified teacher of Physical Education, most recently volunteering at Pannal Primary School.

During Jo's career she has been responsible for planning and leading the PE curriculum including GCSE and BTEC. In 2004, Harrogate Schools became part of the School Sport Partnership Programme. Jo was appointed the School's Sport Co-ordinator for Rosset School where she was responsible for a cluster of Primary Schools two days a week. Jo worked closely with the Primary Link teachers, assisting in their planning and delivery of all aspects of PE in their schools.

Jo was involved in the Primary School's audit of their PE provision, looking at both the curriculum and intra and inter school competition. The results of the audit created an annual action plan, which Jo then supported each school to deliver allowing schools to use PE as a driver for whole school improvement.

Jo has written PE curriculum plans and schemes of work, provided full staff CPD and team teaching during lessons and leading in- service for all staff including headteachers and governors.

Jo was involved in a number of cross-curricular programmes namely the Tackling Numbers (Leeds Carnegie Rugby Club) and Playing for Success (Yorkshire Cricket club) programmes. These initiatives used the medium of sport to help motivate pupils identified as being weak in numeracy and literacy.

Jo has also tutored and trained schools to support targeted interventions. Jo became a Sainsbury's TOP Active Kids Tutor delivering the training to schools across the School Sport partnership. This initiative introduced a range of physical activities and alternative sports designed to be used in out of school hours clubs. The programme aimed to increase the activity levels of those pupils who were not currently participating in physical activity by engaging them in the alternative activities.

Additionally, Jo oversaw the TOP Sportsability training. Supporting disabled and non-disabled pupils to participate in activities together. It also provided options for the less physically able pupils to successfully participate in a range of sports.

Jo is passionate about the value of leadership in PE and the affect that this can have on pupils' self-confidence and self-esteem. She was part of a small team of teachers who created a leadership programme that was used in all of the Primary Schools within the School Sports Partnership. This programme was delivered to Year 6 pupils. On completion of their training these pupils would lead activities in the playground at break and lunch time. Leading to a more active school and also a fantastic tool to improve behaviour. Teachers reported a more structured playground lead to less issues straight after breaks and lunch.

Jo has been working with North Yorkshire Sport for 2 years. She has supported a number of schools to improve how they are utilising the PE and sports premium funding and also delivered the physical activity element to the NYCC food 4 life project aiming to create a healthier, happier school environment.

Jo is also the internal verifier for the professional vocational qualification (level 5/6) PE specialism and subject leadership.
