On the 23rd November 2016, Energise York became the second pool to become Dementia Friendly. The title that Energise will proudly wear was awarded by North Yorkshire Sport and the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) who have been working together to improve swimming pool facilities for people living with dementia.
Research has shown that low impact exercise can be beneficial for physical and mental health and can improve the quality of life for people in all stages of dementia. Swimming in particular has the added benefits of reducing anxiety, improving mood and enhancing psychological well-being. With over 8,000 people living with dementia in North Yorkshire alone North Yorkshire Sport are dedicated to helping to provide safe and reliable facilities for those living with dementia and their family and friends.
The ASA Dementia Friendly Swimming Project has been developed to enhance the swimming experience of those living with dementia and their carers by improving facilities and removing barriers. The project aims to create a safe and friendly swimming environment for people with dementia through the creation of partnerships between adult social care, health trainers, carers, and local community groups.
Energise York are the second of seven engaged pools to complete changes to their facility. Additional signage has been put in place to ensure clearer direction throughout the facility, lifeguards and facility staff were trained on the 'Step Inside Training' course delivered by the Alzheimer's society to ensure they are aware and trained appropriately to cope with people who are living with dementia and starting in January 2017, there will be three Dementia pool sessions included in the timetable where the sessions will have a quieter atmosphere for those who want to take advantage of the new Dementia Friendly facility. It was great to see everything in place at the launch and the staff so passionate about the project and the future changes that are coming.
Paul Bickle, manager of Energise said, "Energise welcomes the whole community, and therefore by receiving Dementia training facilitated by North Yorkshire Sport we are increasing our broad range of activities to include three pool based sessions a week. Our aspiration is for further dementia friendly sessions to operate for Energise in the future."
Amy Garrett, Development Projects Officer at North Yorkshire Sport said, "It's great to have our second facility accredited. Energise have been on board with the project from day one and are very pro-active which is great. The staff have all been so enthusiastic with the changes and with many more exciting changes to come in the New Year, I look forward to seeing the facility develop even further."
