Jo Sherwood

What is your coaching background?

I am from a competitive swimming back ground-I reached national level. Even whilst I was still swimming, I started teaching. I competed as a masters swimmer until I had my first child and then when my children started swimming, I became involved in their club. It's great to give something back and the children I coach know that I do understand them- I have been there. I now coach the more senior swimmers in the club, but I am also membership secretary, so I get opportunity to trial our new members who can be as young as 6 yrs old.

Was there someone you looked up to or inspired you to coach when you were younger?

My mum- she was an ex-swimmer too!

What do you enjoy most about your role as a coach/ instructor?

Celebrating with swimmers when they achieve a goal- whether that is their first dive off a block, or a PB time

What would you say to someone thinking about becoming a coach?

Do it! It is really rewarding and you grow in confidence as a person

Have you overcome any barriers to get into coaching? If so, what and how have you done this?

Juggling full time work and raising three children is a challenge whilst volunteering three nights week to coach, but the friendships that you make is worth it.
