The Sportshall Athletics Champions are Crowned

Yesterday saw schools from all over the county battle for the title of the North Yorkshire School Games Sportshall Athletics champions at Energise Leisure Centre in York.

The action packed year 5 and 6 county finals included both track and field events, starting with the girls and boys obstacle race. The 200 athletes were encouraged to cheer on their teammates throughout the morning, meaning the atmosphere in the sportshall was electric!

Next up were the relay races, the 6 lap lap paarlauf and the over/under relay. Every team gave it their all, meaning there were some extremely close finishes!

Meanwhile, the athletes hopped, skipped and jumped their way through the 5 different field events which included Chest Push, Standing Triple Jump, Standing Long Jump, Vertical Jump and speed bounce. Finishing off the day with the soft javelin and the 4x1 lap relay.

The standard of competition was extremely high, with just a few points between the top 3 schools. A massive congratulations to Archbishops of York CE who fought off the competition to win the gold medal. Also a big well done to Seamer and Irton CP who finished 2nd and Robert Wilkinson who finished 3rd.

A huge thank you to everyone who competed. North Yorkshire Sport's Jody Ivel said "We would like to congratulate all of the teams who gave their best at today's finals, with a huge well done to those that go home with a medal. A massive thank you to our young leaders and Askham Bryan College for their support!"
