During 2015 North Yorkshire Sport have been piloting the Primetime Programme in the Hambleton District of North Yorkshire. This innovative programme has used age appropriate sport and physical activity to engage older people and people in danger of experiencing loneliness and isolation in rural areas.

Working in partnership with Hambleton District Council; 5 local community groups in Husthwaite, Hutton Rudby, Stillington, Stokesley and Topcliffe have been supported to deliver Primetime sessions. This has included:

  • Preliminary work to promote and identify a local need for the programme
  • Delivery of 8 weeks of coached sessions in accessible sports including boccia and new age kurling
  • Equipment and additional support including coaching courses, session plans, funding advice and administrative information provided to enable sessions to continue after the initial 8 weeks

A celebration event where the 5 groups gathered to compete in a variety of activities was held at Hambleton Leisure Centre; enabling the attendees to extend their social networks and look forward to future club developments and matches.
